BC born, I moved to Alberta for school way back when I was a young thing fresh out of school with dreams in my head about how I was going to change the world. After completing my Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education, meeting my husband, and moving to Edmonton, I worked as a teacher until I got pregnant and my dreams only grew. My first pregnancy ended in a devastating miscarriage that had me feeling completely alone with many of my dreams dashed. Eventually, I went on to have 4 children within 6 years (3 boys, 1 girl) and my dreams began to grow again.
Being away from my family, I needed to build my own support network once I had children. So I did. But I forgot that I needed to tell them how I needed them to help me. So I stumbled and ended up fighting postpartum depression until I remembered to ask for help. After having my last child, I realized that parents need so much more support as they transition through the fourth trimester -no matter how many babies they have had. With each child I had, I found that the support lessened as my support network thought I had it all together.
Not at first. It’s just plain HARD adding another person to your family, taking care of all the baby’s needs, and still taking care of the older children’s needs. On top of that, managing a household and nurturing a relationship with your partner and making sure you’re making time for yourself, oh, and don’t forget that you need to keep Great Aunt Margaret informed of how the whole family is doing by regularly updating your social media or you will never hear the end of it. It’s enough to make your head spin.
